A Touching Story by Lowell Steward, Jr.
This past Friday, 7-17-09, Lowell Steward Sr the co-founder of the Los Angeles Chapter of Tuskegee Airmen, expressed to me that this day was one of the proudest moments of his life. On this day, Robin Petgrave of the Tomorrow's Aeronautical Museum, sent two of his record setting young pilots to the city of Oxnard in order to transport us to the Compton Airport. Pilot Brian Monette and and co-pilot Jonathan Strickland flew Lowell Sr to the Airport, and upon his arrival, presented him with a large Sharpie. He was asked to sign the airplane that bore his name in bold black letters.
The plane was a tribute to Tuskegee Airmen from the Los Angeles Chapter commemorating their heroics during WWII. Their tails sported red paint as history met the present and it brought a slight tear to a proud patriot's eye. He dutifly found an appropriate location to affix his mark signifying the 100th fighter group class of 43G. It was a touching moment to see other planes of other Airmen, some here, and some a memory, but all just as wonderful.s
The planes are used for student instruction for pilots like Monette, Strickland, and Kimberly Anyadike and those new pilots on the horizon.
